KARACHI: A high level mission from the Asian Development Bank (ADB) on Thursday reassured to prioritize the Karachi–Rohri rail corridor under the ML-1 framework, a critical link to facilitate transportation from the multi-billion-dollar Reko Diq copper and gold projects to the seaports.According to the details, a high-level 10-member ADB reconnaissance mission, led by senior transport specialist Suenghyun Kim, visited Karachi Port Trust to assess existing port-rail connectivity and logistics infrastructure. The government has already secured USD2 billion in financing from the ADB, with project completion targeted before December 2028.Chairman KPT Rear Admiral Shahid Ahmed (Retd) briefed the delegation on the port’s cargo-handling capabilities and its critical role as Pakistan’s maritime gateway, emphasizing the urgent need for improved inland cargo movement infrastructure.Currently, cargo from Karachi Port relies entirely on road trailers, creating severe urban congestion and heightened road-safety risks. The situation is worsened by operational restrictions that prohibit trailer movement from the port until after 11:00 PM, despite the port’s round-the-clock cargo operations, creating a significant bottleneck in cargo trans-shipment, the KPT chairman said. The enhanced rail connectivity under ML-1 will enable Karachi port to dispatch containerized and bulk cargo on a 24/7 basis, fundamentally transforming logistics operations. Major beneficiaries include South Asia Pakistan Terminals Limited, Karachi Gateway Terminal, and Karachi Gateway Multipurpose Terminal, which are expected to see improved throughput and operational efficiency.Discussions also covered KPT’s ongoing development initiatives, including dredging operations to increase draught depth and strengthen multimodal integration with terminal operators. The ADB reaffirmed its commitment, identifying the Karachi-Rohri rail corridor as the priority project. The reconnaissance mission marks the initial step toward revitalizing rail connectivity to the ports following earlier government engagements. The delegation concluded the day’s proceedings with site visits to existing port facilities and terminal operators to gain a firsthand assessment of current infrastructure and operational challenges.Copyright Business Recorder, 2026
