Wizz Air to Base Eighth Aircraft in Sofia, Expanding Destination Network

Wizz Air will base its eighth aircraft at Vasil Levski Sofia Airport from July and will significantly expand the network of destinations served from Bulgaria’s main international airport. The news was reported on Friday by the airline’s Director of Network Development, Andras Szabo, during a media event titled “New Horizons for Wizz Air from Sofia: New Destinations, More Opportunities,” held at Terminal 2 of the airport.According to Szabo, the new aircraft represents an investment of around EUR 100 million and is of the latest generation, with lower fuel consumption, reduced noise, and improved environmental performance. The 239-seat plane will provide an additional half a million seats annually and will allow the launch of new routes.Among the new destinations from Sofia are a daily connection to Budapest, flights to Palermo and Rhodes, as well as new routes to Egypt – Hurghada and Sharm El-Sheikh – which are in the final stages of approval. The Hungarian ultra-low-cost carrier also confirmed previously announced new lines to Corfu and Santander, and a new connection between Varna and Larnaca.Szabo emphasized that Bulgaria and Sofia are among Wizz Air’s key markets. Since the start of its operations in the country, the airline has carried over 33 million passengers, with more than 25 million flying from Sofia alone. The airline will increase the frequency of flights on several existing routes, with some becoming daily, including to Madrid, Rome, Prague, Tel Aviv, Valencia, and Warsaw. According to Szabo, this will improve Sofia’s connectivity with other European capitals and contribute to attracting more tourists and business travellers. The media event was also attended by Jesus Caballero, CEO of Sofia Airport operator SOF Connect, and Salvatore Gabriele Imperiale, Corporate Communications Manager at Wizz Air.
